Achilles Injuries
Achilles tendonitis is a very common condition seen in active sports people, children and middle age-men and women. Achilles tendonitis, as the name suggests is acute inflammation of the Achilles tendon which runs down the back of the leg and attaches to the back of the heel bone. This may become sore due to quick bursts or running/ sprints as seen in football, cricket, basketball and tennis. It may also be due to inefficient biomechanics such as flat feet, hyper-pronation and tight muscle groups. Pain may be felt around and above the heel bone and even in to the calf muscle belly.
Achilles tendonosis however is chronic, progressive, degeneration of the Achilles tendon. It is very important to differentiate between the two similar conditions as treatment programs will vary. Treatment for Achilles tendonosis will incorporate strengthening and stretching exercises which is crucial for optimum recovery, however Achilles tendinitis must allow for resting and repairing of the tendon.
Treatment for Achilles injuries may include:
- Rest/Ice
- Customised orthoses
- Strapping and padding to support the foot
- Footwear advice and education
- Heel raises to offload the Achilles tendon
- Anti-inflammatory medication
- Dry needling
